You don't really hear too many people talk about the history and the culture of Alcorn without talking about the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite and Golden Girls. From the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite back in the day to now, you don't really see too many differences. The tradition is still there. And that's honestly something that we try to instill in our members. Keeping the tradition alive is one of the most important things we have.
When they see us coming, when they see our specific style, they know that that's us. And the Golden Girls and Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite over the years have done an outstanding job of keeping that tradition alive.
The Golden Girls were actually founded in 1968. It was founded by Samuel Griffin and it actually started out with eight original girls. I remember my sponsors and Novia Rogers, she told us about how there were major events where they will perform in Miami and Atlanta and it was pretty much just a sight to see.
Every day during practice, they always give you a smile. They're ready to greet you. They're ready to give a show. They always have so much energy when they're dancing and it really reflects especially in the halftime shows. They really give their all. They really have a good campus environment to they are really engaged with everybody.
My dad actually attended Alcorn State University. He used to bring me out here to the games when [inaudible] being a little boy in the stands, just being able to see the band marching and hearing them -- just wanting to be a part of it. That's why we always maintain traditions because you can see yourself in there and it's always good to know where you come from.
